First year notes

  • 1st semester:

The semester consists of common engineering subjects than core civil engineering subjects like: chemistry, maths-1 and so on. But c- programming in this semester is found basically hard by most of the students. Thermodynamics is also a tough subject as it has some newer concept. Drawing-1 is also a newer but essential concept to student for the upcoming semesters.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING

Civil engineering is a professional discipline that deals with design, maintenance, of physical and naturally built environment including works like: roads, bridges, tunnels, dams and canals. The history of civil engineering goes back to time immemorial since the mankind begin. But to say approximate it goes around 4000 and 2000 BC in Mesopotamia and Egypt.
During the early days, civil engineering and military engineering was considered to be the same. The earliest practice of civil engineering was proclaimed by John Seamton who constructed the Eddystone lighthouse and was a poclaimed civil and a mechanical engineer. Heis usually taken as father of modern civil engineering. The eminent physiscst, mathematician, and astronomer Galilio Galeli is also considered to be one of the prominent figure in field of civil engineering and structural mechanics. Significant advances in higher mathematics and mechanics developed in 18th century greately contributed to the field of civil engineering. Works by J. Lagrangne, L. Euler, Robert Hook etc. is greatly significant.
Geotechnical engineering, water supply engineering, structural engineering, irrigation, highway engineering, surveying , estimating and costing and many more branches are all the sub-branches of civil engineering. So we can say that it is the mother of all engineering branches.
So we can say that we can't think of the world without civil engineering. Can we??
Here is a small  motivational video clip on civil engineering:-
